How I Keep Busy

Writer's picture: Solva StoriesSolva Stories

Hi,

This is the end of my third week of self-isolation and I am surprised how well my husband Tony and I are coping. Tony takes our dog out early every morning and pops to the shop here for odds and ends. Our son John and fiancee Sarran have a reoccurring Asda order every Friday so we send them an email with our order, so we are lucky and we pay them by bank transfer. They leave our order on the doorstep of course.

Although we miss chatting and visiting our family, we often video our daughter and grandchildren in Surrey.

But how do we keep ourselves busy?

Tony loves his garden even though there's not much to do yet. He's also joined the Solva and St Davids Art Group which he loves and after me nagging him to join he's now busy every day doing requests for all the family friends.

I on the other hand love cooking and miss baking for Solva Friday Club. I am a volunteer for Solva Care and bake cakes once a fortnight for Friday Club where I am so lucky to have made new friends.

I can't praise Solva Care enough for all the wonderful work they do for our community. There are so many selfless people involved in the charity. There are lots of trips to enjoy and many other interests with crafts, fun, quizzes and more. The all-round care our residents receive who are lonely or need help is always a priority.

I've also been taking inspiration from the activities (arts, crafts, quizzes, etc) we do with Solva Care to stay busy during our self-isolation.

Tony has joined the "Man Shed", which is a national charity and is in its infancy here in Solva. They meet on a Tuesday at 2:00 in the football club for coffee and a chat and need more members who can help or give ideas to our residents. The website "Man Shed Cymru" will tell you all you need to know and I'm sure they also have ideas for things you can do at home while in isolation.

Lastly, I have joined BookBox which is an online library free of charge. You need a library card to join. It's great! Pembrokeshire Council Library Haverfordwest have all you need to borrow.

At least we can look forward to better weather very soon so let us know on the Solva Stories blog to spread the word on what you do to keep yourself busy at home.

Stay Safe,

Margaret Hughes
